Getting Started

Account settings

Managing your profile, username, social links, subscription, and account security.

Account settings are accessed from the user menu (your avatar, top right of the dashboard). Click Settings to open the settings dialog — it opens as an overlay panel, not a separate page.

Tabs

The settings dialog has five tabs:

TabWhat it contains
EmergencyEmergency contacts, personal details, medical notes, Safety QR
AccountUsername, email change, password change, newsletter preference
Social linksInstagram, Strava, YouTube, X (Twitter) profile URLs
PlanCurrent plan, limits, and upgrade or manage billing
Delete accountPermanent account deletion

Emergency tab

This is the control panel for Trailkeep's safety features. It has three sub-tabs: Contacts, Personal, and Safety QR.

Check-in Timer

The optional Check-in Timer (deadman switch) is configured from the Start tab — open the timer icon on the idle or active trip card. Choose your check-in window (24h or 36h) and enable or disable the layer there.

Return-by monitoring is always armed when you tap Go and your trip has an end date — it does not have a separate toggle. See Safety Timer for how both layers work during a trip.

Contacts

Add up to two emergency contacts — name, email, and phone. These are the people who receive an overdue alert if return-by monitoring or the Check-in Timer fires.

Choose contacts who will actually act on an alert — ideally someone who knows your plans and can coordinate a response from wherever they are.

Personal

Your personal information: medical conditions, blood type, allergies, next of kin. This tab is optional, but the information here goes directly to search and rescue crews if you go overdue. Fill it in before your first trip.

Username

Your username is your public display name — it appears on your shared trip pages and gear lists alongside your Pioneer badge (if applicable). It can be changed at any time.

Rules: 3–50 characters, letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens only. Availability is checked in real time as you type.

If you signed up with Google, your username is not set during registration. Set it here before sharing any trips or gear lists. Out of ideas? Use your trail name.

Email and password

Email change: Enter a new email address and Trailkeep sends a verification link to the new address. The change takes effect once confirmed.

Password change: Requires your current password. Minimum 6 characters.

Both options are hidden for accounts that signed up with Google.

Add links to your Instagram, Strava, YouTube, or X profile. These appear in the header of your shared trip pages and gear lists — below your username. They are hidden if none are set.

Dark mode

The theme toggle is in the dashboard header (top right, next to the user menu) — not inside account settings. It has three options: System (follows your device setting), Light, and Dark.

The preference is stored locally per device. Changing it on your phone does not affect your desktop.

Display preferences

The settings icon in the dashboard header controls what columns and panels are visible in the Trip Planner and Pack Planner:

  • Show description — description field below the list or trip name (basic formatting: bold, italic, lists, links; single line breaks preserved)
  • Show item prices, Show worn items, Show consumable items, Checklist mode
  • Show water sources, Show resupply points, Show GPX mode

These are account-wide and apply instantly without a page reload.

Plan and billing

The Plan tab shows your current plan name, status, and key limits.

  • Free tier: use the Pro button in the dashboard header, or Upgrade to Pro in this tab, to start checkout ($5.99/month or $39.99/year).
  • Pro subscriber: a Manage subscription button opens the Stripe portal to update payment details, change billing period, or cancel.
  • Pioneer or Creator: your current status and, where applicable, your access expiry date.

Pioneer badge

The Pioneer badge appears on your public shared pages next to your username. It marks you as an early Trailkeep user. It is not shown inside the account settings UI itself.

Account deletion

The Delete account tab requires:

  1. Typing DELETE MY ACCOUNT
  2. Checking a confirmation checkbox

Deletion is permanent. We delete everything we know about you — all trips, gear lists, safety data, shared links, and your profile. There is no recovery option. Export anything you want to keep before proceeding.

Sign out

Logout is at the bottom of the user menu. Signing out clears your local cache and redirects to the homepage.
