Pack Planner

Sharing a list

How to generate a public read-only gear list link, what visitors see, and how cloning and vault copying work.

Every gear list in the Pack Planner can be shared as a public, read-only page at /gear-list/[id]. No login is required to view it.

  1. Open Plan → Pack and select the list you want to share
  2. In the planner toolbar (right side), use the Share control — on mobile this is a Share chip; on desktop it shows the URL path (e.g. trailkeep.com/gear-list/ab12)
  3. Tap or click to copy the link. The URL is created automatically the first time the bar loads — there is no separate "Generate link" step

The same short URL stays with that list until you delete the list. There is no in-app "Stop sharing" or revoke button — deleting the list removes the public page (404).

Linking a list to a trip (backpack chip in Trip Planner) is separate from sharing the gear list URL. A linked list feeds moving time and Active burn in your private plan; the public gear list page shows pack composition only. See Day stats.

Shared gear list — page header

The top of a shared gear list page: list name with clone icon button, optional creator stats icon, @username with Pioneer badge, social profile icons, and the summary chart

  • List name with the Clone button beside it
  • Creator stats (chart icon) — visible only to the list owner on a Creator account; opens an analytics dialog
  • Author username with Pioneer badge (if applicable)
  • Social links (Instagram, Strava, YouTube, X) — shown only if the list owner has set them; hidden automatically if none are set
  • List description (if set) — rendered with basic formatting (bold, italic, lists, links; single line breaks preserved)

Weight summary chart

A stacked bar chart or pie chart (toggle via the chart icon next to the unit selector). The page opens in whichever chart type the owner last preferred on that list. Visitors can:

  • Switch between bar and pie using the chart icon
  • Switch weight units (g, oz, lb, kg) using the selector — this changes the totals and chart, but not individual item weights (see below)
  • Click any segment or category row to scroll to that category in the list below
  • Collapse the breakdown rows (appears automatically on lists with more than 5 categories)

When consumable items have kcal values set, food energy totals appear inline in the chart breakdown — per category (when that category has kcal) and on the Total row (sum across all consumables).

Shared gear list — item row detail (mobile)

Mobile category view: item name (tap to copy to vault when logged in), URL link icon, chevron note toggle, and expanded notes below

Mobile screenshot — note expand/collapse is mobile-only behavior

Each item row shows:

ElementDetail
NamePlain text when logged out. When logged in, the name is clickable to copy to Gear Vault (+ icon on hover). Separate link icon opens product URLs in a new tab
NotesDesktop: truncated with full text on hover. Mobile: a chevron appears if notes exist — tap to expand/collapse
ImageDesktop: thumbnail when any item in the list has an image; hover for a larger preview
IndicatorsWorn item (shirt icon), consumable item (fork icon), star colour (star icon in saved colour)
WeightShown in the unit the item was entered in — not converted to the global unit selector
PriceShown only when any item in the list has a price — not controlled by your private "Show item prices" visibility toggle
QuantityItem quantity

When any item uses a sponsored (affiliate) link, a small disclaimer appears below the chart.

Water sources and resupply point indicators are trip-specific and do not appear on gear list pages — only on shared trip views.

Weight unit note: The global unit selector (top of the chart) changes the summary chart and category totals. Individual item weight rows always show the unit they were entered in. This is intentional — 400g stays as 400g even if the chart is set to display in oz.

Checklist state

Your checklist state (packed/unpacked) is private — it is never transmitted to the shared view. All items appear on the shared page regardless of whether they are checked in your dashboard.

Cloning a list

Logged-in visitors see a Clone button next to the list name. Cloning copies the full list — all categories and items in the same order — into their own Pack Planner.

Shared gear list — clone auth prompt

The auth dialog that opens when a non-logged-in visitor clicks the Clone button — prompts to sign in or create an account

If not logged in: clicking Clone opens the sign-in/sign-up dialog.

If logged in: the clone runs immediately, subject to:

  • Offline check — if your device is offline, clone is blocked with a prompt to reconnect
  • List limit check — if you are at your plan's list limit, a message appears: "You've reached your list limit." The clone does not proceed.

The same list cap applies when importing from CSV or LighterPack — import always creates a new list.

The cloned list keeps the original name. You can rename it from your Pack Planner after cloning.

What gets cloned: all categories, all items in the same order, and planning fields — name, weight, unit, notes, price, quantity, worn flag, consumable flag, and star colour. Checklist state is not cloned — items always start as unchecked.

Product links: cloning is for your own trip planning. If you clone someone else's shared list, their affiliate tags and sponsored-link setup are not copied — you get plain product URLs where possible (Amazon links are cleaned to a neutral product page; unrecoverable short links are omitted). If you clone your own shared list while logged in as the owner, your links and vault setup are preserved.

Copying individual items to your vault

When logged in, click an item name to copy that row to your Gear Vault (+ appears on hover). When logged out, names are plain text — there is no copy affordance.

If not logged in: if copy is triggered, a toast prompts you to sign in. Use Sign in in the page header first.

If logged in: the copy runs immediately with no limit check — the Gear Vault has no item cap. Offline copy is blocked with a toast.

What gets copied: name, weight, unit, price, quantity, notes, worn flag, consumable flag, and star colour, plus a product URL when one is available. Affiliate tags from someone else's list are not copied — the same sanitization rules as full list clone apply unless you are copying from your own shared list while logged in as the owner.

Search engine indexing

Shared gear lists are publicly indexed by search engines. Anyone searching for gear lists on a specific trail may find yours — this mirrors how Lighterpack works and is intentional. To remove a public page, delete the list from your Pack Planner.

Removing public access

Delete the list from Pack Planner (Delete in the list header menu). The share row is removed with the list and /gear-list/[id] returns 404. There is no separate revoke control in the dashboard.
