Stars and labels
How star ratings, worn/consumable flags, water sources, and resupply points work — and what the colour coding means on mobile.
Trailkeep uses two types of item flags: stars for priority rating and type labels for functional categorisation. Both affect how items are displayed, especially on mobile.
Star ratings
Every item has a star rating field. Tapping the star cycles through four states:
| State | Colour | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| No star | — | Default, unrated |
| Yellow star | ★ yellow | Important / must-not-forget |
| Red star | ★ red | Critical / cannot leave without |
| Green star | ★ green | Packed / ready to go |
Stars have no enforced semantics — use them however makes sense for your workflow. The cycle order is: none → yellow → red → green → none.
On desktop: the star icon appears inline in the item row and can be toggled from the row directly.
On mobile: the star toggle is inside the ⋮ action menu. Tap the chevron ▾ on an item row to expand it, then tap ⋮ to access the star toggle.
Type labels
Worn items
Mark an item as worn to exclude its weight from base weight calculations. Worn weight is tracked separately in the pack summary — useful for items like boots, jacket, or rain gear that you wear rather than carry in your pack.
Enable the worn toggle on item rows via Preferences (⚙) → Pack Planner → Worn items (on by default). Toggle it off for a simpler row if you do not use this feature.
Consumable items
Mark an item as consumable to exclude its weight from base weight. Consumable weight is tracked separately — useful for food, fuel, and water that you plan to use up during the trip.
Enable the consumable toggle via Preferences → Pack Planner → Consumable items (on by default).
Water sources (trip context)
Mark a waypoint as a water source to flag where you can fill up your water reserves. Water source waypoints:
- Show a blue water droplet icon on the map and in the waypoint list
- Appear in a dedicated summary view so you can quickly answer "where is the next water?"
- Show a blue indicator in the shared trip view
Enable via Preferences → Trip Planner → Water sources (on by default).
Resupply points (trip context)
Mark a waypoint as a resupply point to flag towns, post offices, or supply caches. Resupply points show an amber basket icon and appear in the same dedicated summary view alongside water sources.
Enable via Preferences → Trip Planner → Resupply points (on by default).
Water sources and resupply points are waypoint flags — they appear in the Trip Planner, not in gear lists. The worn and consumable flags are item flags — they appear in Pack Planner gear lists.
Mobile colour coding
On mobile screens (≤744px), item rows use a two-sided coloured border to show status at a glance — without expanding the row:
Left border — functional status:
| Flag | Border colour |
|---|---|
| Worn (pack) | Blue |
| Water source (trip) | Blue |
| Consumable (pack) | Amber |
| Resupply point (trip) | Amber |
| None | No border |
Right border — star rating:
| Star | Border colour |
|---|---|
| Yellow star | Yellow |
| Red star | Red |
| Green star | Green |
| No star | No border |
An item that is both worn and starred yellow shows both borders simultaneously: blue on the left, yellow on the right. This gives instant at-a-glance status without tapping anything.
On desktop, the same information is displayed via small inline icon columns rather than border tints.
The coloured border system only appears in your own dashboard (edit view). In shared/public views, mobile uses small inline icons next to item names — no border colours.
Finding actions on mobile
All toggle actions on mobile are accessed via the expand + dropdown flow:
- Tap the chevron ▾ on an item row to expand it
- Tap the ⋮ menu to see: Star, Price, Worn/Water toggle, Consumable/Food toggle, and (in Pack Planner) Add to Vault
- The Delete button is always visible outside the menu once expanded
On desktop all the same actions appear as inline icon buttons on the right side of each row, visible on hover.
The "Food" label in the mobile ⋮ menu refers to the same consumable/resupply flag as "Toggle consumable" on desktop and "Resupply point" in the shared view — the basket icon is the same across all surfaces.
